- Rachel Young is the daughter of John and Sarah Young. She was born in New Ross Ireland on 16th May 1882. Rachel's father John Young was born about 1834 in Wexford and her Mother Sarah Baile was born about 1837 in Kilkenny Ireland.
John and Sarah Married at Newton Barry, Wexford, Ireland in 1857 but didn't start their family until nine years later. they lived in Tinnaranny, located about 2 miles from NewRoss, in the parish of Rossbercon, County of Kilkenny, Wexford Ireland. The port of NewRoss is Ireland's only inland port, some 32Km from the sea, situated on the river Barrow.
They immigrated to Australia with their eight children aged between 1 and 14. Rachel was 4 years old.
By 1913, John was working as a gardener, according to the electoral roll.
The family occupied the house on the corner of 137 Cleveland St and Edward Street. Many babies of the new generation were born there and it was the home of many members of the family for at least 28 years. It was a real home for an Irish family that stayed together and support each other.
Rachel's father John died on 7th October 1922 aged 88 and mother Sarah died on 21st December 1928 aged 91 of Cerebral Thrombosis.
Rachel Burcher (n.Young died on 2nd July 1964 of Cerebral Hemorrhage aged 82, late of West Ryde. The family grave with the memorial for Barbara and John is at Waverley Cemetery in Sydney, New South Wales.
