Notes |
- Marriage records obtain from Digger - South Australian Marriages, Registrations 1842-1916 Book/Page 103/525. At the time of their marriage Duncan was 25yrs old and Lucy was 22yrs old.
Birth details obtained from South Australian Births 1842-1906 Book 12, Page 369, District Code Nai.
Lucy lived at Hoyleton at the time of her marriage. They had a butcher's shop in Charles Street Jeparit. Lucy was killed in a motor accident in Dimboola. The death certificate states the cause of death as shock fracture of the base of the skull. An inquest was held 30th and 31st December. She was buried on 31st at Jeparit Cemetery by the Church of England Minister.
Lucy named her children from the books she happened to be reading at the time. We are told Lucy and Duncan's sons were all big men (5'11" or 6') with black very curly hair and blue eyes. They had great physical strength. Ham's son saw him lift a 152 pound anvil under one arm and walk 70 or so yards. The boys were also boxers. The Smith family tell that Lucy was the daughter of "Rich man Tucker". This name seems unknown to the rest of the family. It was said that Lucy's father disapproved of her marriage to Duncan. She married at 16 although the certificate says 22 and presumably without any family present as none were witnesses.
Strange circumstances surround Lucy's death. She was supposedly in a care with Mr Hogan (local solicitor - Mrs Hogan was her friend) going to see her son John and had to wait for a train connection. Mr Hogan said they went over a bump in the road (it was a touring car) and she was thrown out and had a wound on her temple. Questions were raised as to whether she was killed on the way. She always kept money tied in a handkerchief. The handkerchief was found but there was no money in it. A detective was brought from Melbourne. The stone in the cemetery in Jeparit is placed there by the local townspeople in remembrance. Lucy worked as a midwife using her own house as a hospital to support herself and children after Duncan died. She worked with Dr Gawn. (The Tucker Family in Australia, 1992)
