Notes |
- In early 1951 two young women set sail on the S.S. Strathaird bound for Bombay where they would change ships and head for their destination in East Africa.
Those women were Joan Eatch and Elisabeth Know, CMS Missionaries on their way to Mvumi in the centre of what was then the British colony of Tanganyika.
It was an eventful Journey. Leaving Sydney during a cargo handling strike, the ship encountered a storm of such force, two days out of Fremantle, that one of the ship's engines failed.
More excitement awaited the ship which, en route to Bombay, endured a huge wave breaking over its side and flooding many decks. The second leg of the women's Journey to Africa was also noteworthy with delays while the ship's surgeon operated on a passenger of a neighbouring ship.
Finally, as Joan recalled, "The ship was unable to land at Zanzibar as we had smallpox suspects on board. We had to content ourselves with the delicious odours of the different spices.
?fter a period of language learning in Berega, Joan took up her role at Mvumi Hospital (one of the Jungle Doctor Hospitals) while Elisabeth embarked on teaching English and Scripture at Mvumi Girls' School.
In 1961 the women witnessed the historic independence of the country eventually known as Tanzania. It was a moving sight to see the Union Jack lowered and the new nation's flag of green, yellow and black hoisted in its place,"said Joan.
Joan remained in Tanzania for 31 years, moving around to senior positions at various hospitals as the need arose. Many who were mentored by her at Mvumi and Kilimarinde Training Schools have since held leading positions in the largest hospitals in the country.
? count it a privilege to have been part of the training of nurses and midwives and made many dear friends in that time,"" Joan said. "The verse of Scripture I have always hung onto is Philippians 4:13, 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens Me'. I learned in Tanzania that I can trust God in everything.
? praise God for the growth of the Church in Tanzania and the work of CMS there. The leaders of the Church need our prayers for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and for wisdom in decision-making.
