Notes |
- Mary is the younger twin sister of Elizabeth.
- Mary Ann Kennedy was born on 11 May 1830 at Penrith. She was the younger of twins and at the age of 20 years married William Potts. They married on 2 October, 1850 at Richmond. Their Certificate of Marriage shows that his brother. Henry Potts and her sister Elizabeth Kennedy (her elder twin) were the witnesses. Another aspect on the certificate shows that they placed their mark (X) in the register, which indicates that neither of them could read or write at the time. A copy of the Marriage Certificate is attached.
Mary Ann Kennedy has a very interesting background and of course to us, as they are also related to our family.
Her grandfather was Donald Kennedy who came to New South Wales as a convict aboard "Royal Admiral". He was tried and sentenced at Inverness, Scotland (his place of birth).
William Potts and Mary Ann Potts (nee Kennedy) had 13 children. William Potts was a shoemaker by trade and did this work all his life. They lived at Richmond, where four children were born until about 1855, when they moved to Bathurst, where they had a further 7 children. About 1873 they moved again, this time to Mudgee, where another child was born at "Havilah" Station. Another son , died when young. In this area, William Potts continued as a shoemaker around the Mudgee, New South Wales area.
Mary Ann Potts (n. Kennedy) was a midwife. When she went to a home, to deliver a baby, sometimes she might have had to stay there for a week, if it was a difficult case. She would always throw some rabbit traps into her sulky so that she could catch a few rabbits and make a meal for the woman before she left. She always wore a large blue and white check bonnet.
Mary Ann Potts (n. Kennedy) died on 7 June 1918, aged 88 years at Lue (near Mudgee) and is buried at the Roman Catholic Cemetery there.
William and Mary Ann Potts brought our branch of the family over the mountains to the central western plains of New South Wales.
